City of Lagos

Algarve city with the most glorious past of the whole region, city facing the sea, which opened doors for the "Discoveries" of the New World.

In the century. XV, Prince Henry, known as "The Navigator", prepared and equipped caravels and paved the way for major discoveries.

It was thus that the small port of Lagos, has become a gateway to the world and a meeting point for the international maritime routes where paths crossed many cultures.

The City of Lagos has become a tourist center of great relevance in the Algarve, but managed to keep far its cosmopolitan spirit. This city is known for the diversity of colors, light and mixing of races and peoples, which throughout the year visit the city.


In the present days, Lagos offers all who it visit, excellent possibilities of practicing all kind of sports and nautical activities. With its stunning golden hillsides - the "Costa d Oiro" - presents one of the most photographed motifs of Portugal. The city can be explored on foot, many of the houses retain traditional center stone carvings, those with their wrought iron balconies and typical courtyards. The extensive range of shops, bars and restaurants line the cobbled streets, particularly the “ Rua 25 de Abril “, known for the huge number of restaurants, shops and bars. This area also has a vibrant nightlife with many bars and pubs.

The marina of Lagos with its contemporary setting, is an excellent place to have a drink and enjoy pleasant moments. The marina is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, with a spectacular view over the city of Lagos.


Its beaches stand out for the beauty of the hillside, with the craggy rocks and rare beauty, as the Ponta da Piedade, a place that attracts lots of tourists to meet and photograph this idyllic spot of this city. The beaches of Lagos are much sought after and visited the excellent water quality and the finest white sand that invites all the beautiful and long sunbathing. Beaches are safe for families, with children find places of leisure, relaxation and they offer an excellent way of family life. The most popular beaches are the Meia Praia, Praia Dona Ana, Praia da Batata, Beach Doll, among others.

Golf lovers, located in the city of Lagos, is a lot of possibility for the practicing of this sport, choosing the Golf Palmares and Boavista Golf Resort, both with splendid views, many hotels have often special arrangements for their clients.


The level of culinary and catering of Lagos is known for its huge range of restaurants with typical food of the region, predominantly fish and shellfish good of our Algarve coast. The mackerel alimado, the shells of feijoada, a stew of clams and squid are some of the specialties that are the delight of all who tasted this delicacies.

San Sebastian Church

It was a chapel of the fourteenth century, having been transformed into a church dedicated to the saint, San Sebastian in 1463. We can glimpse the top of this church, fabulous views over Lagos and the sea.

St. Anthony s Church

Church of the eighteenth century with impressive gold carvings, is one of the most beautiful and appreciated of the the country, the same being a fantastic example of Portuguese Baroque.

Museums and historical sites.

Walls

Source Carthaginian or Roman city walls, were also increased by the Arabs, and later in the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, to follow the growth of the city. From the walls, we can enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the hills and the bay of Lagos.

Slave Market

Local idyllic in the town, the market, the slaves brought from Africa in 1444, were sold in what is believed to have been the first slave market in Europe. On the ground floor of the building is now an art gallery.

Museu Municipal Dr. José Formosinho

Located next to St. Anthonys Church, this museum contains a unique collection of religious art in the country, contains archaeological remains and paintings, plus several sections devoted to the history of Lagos and the Algarve ethnography and ores. On acquisition of the entrance ticket to the museum, it also includes access to the church of St. Anthony.
